Always go to a headshot session with a plan.

My agent used to ask me to bring in a list of 16 different ways she could send me out today. Then from those, she would pick 3 and say "take pictures of these."

You can always simulate this experiment with mentors and people you trust (but you know, don't bring a 16 character list to a random casting director who has no time for this stuff). But always have a plan of action and a clear idea of what looks you want before you meet with your photographer.
